What the bank said

The Governing Council said the upside risks to inflation and the downside risks to growth had intensified, although incoming information was broadly consistent with its previous assessment.

It said the war in the Middle East had led to a sharp increase in energy prices, pushing up inflation and weighing on economic sentiment.

It said longer-term inflation expectations remained well anchored, although shorter-horizon expectations had moved up significantly.

Guidance. The Governing Council said it would follow a data-dependent, meeting-by-meeting approach and was not pre-committing to a particular rate path.

“The longer the war continues and the longer energy prices remain high, the stronger is the likely impact on broader inflation and the economy.”
