What the bank said

The Board said upside risks to inflation were materialising as the Middle East conflict broadened, with global energy prices well above its August forecasts and higher fuel costs partly passing into other prices.

It noted that capacity pressures remained, firms reported cost pressures and short-term inflation expectations were elevated, while recent growth and inflation data had run above expectations.

The Board judged that further tightening was warranted to return inflation to target within a reasonable period.

Guidance. The Board said it would do what it considers necessary to bring inflation sustainably back to target, including increasing the cash rate target further if needed.
