What the bank said

The Bank Board said it decided amid exceptional uncertainty from the conflict in the Middle East and discussed scenarios for its impact on inflation and activity.

It said the new forecast put inflation in the upper half of the tolerance band for the rest of the year because of higher fuel prices, averaging 2.2% in 2026, with core inflation around 3%.

It assessed the risks to the inflation outlook as inflationary overall and concluded that monetary policy needs to be kept relatively tight.

Guidance. The Bank Board said it would base decisions on newly available data and that keeping inflation near 2% currently requires relatively tight monetary policy.

“The Bank Board made its decision today amid exceptional uncertainty stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.”
