What the bank said

The Council said inflation rose to 1.8% in March because of higher fuel prices while core inflation fell to 1.9%, in line with the March Inflation Report.

It said risk premia on Hungarian assets declined after the parliamentary elections and the forint appreciated, but exchange rate volatility remained above its level before the Iran war.

The MNB expected inflation to rise above the tolerance band from the third quarter of 2026 as high energy prices pass through, before returning sustainably to target in the second half of 2027.

Guidance. The Council said a careful and patient approach remained necessary, tight monetary conditions were warranted, and it would decide on the base rate in a cautious and data-driven manner.
